The most expensive book in the world
A first copy of John James Audubon’s “Birds of America”, one of the best-selling natural history books, was sold for $ 9.65 million at an auction in New York, Christie’s said Friday.
The book dates back to the 19th century and contains more than 400 hand-colored illustrations of about 1,037 birds, one of only 13 complete collections believed to still be in the possession of individuals, according to Reuters.
Christie’s said: The price paid by a buyer who asked not to be named was the second highest price for the book at auction, and another was sold for $ 10.27 million in 2010.
The book “Birds of America” was first published as a series on parts between 1827 and 1838 and put Audubon reached in the work it took years to find and draw all the known factions of birds in North America.
The book, sold Thursday, is owned by US businessman Carl W. Nobelock Jr., who died in 2016. The sale money will be allocated to protect plants, animals and natural habitats within the framework of the Noblock Family Foundation.
